Database of Mecklenburg Emigrants

In 1990 some 60 million US citizens were recorded as having German ancestry.

From 1820 to 1914 5.5 million people emigrated from Germany.

About 250,000 people from Mecklenburg left their homeland between 1850 to 1900,
most of them going to the United States of America.

I. M. A. R.  has at its disposal an extensive database that contains particulars of some 25,000 emigrants from Mecklenburg. This database is continiously updated. With the help of the information in our database we have been able to answer many enquiries from descendants of Mecklenburg emigrants in Germany and from abroad, mainly from the USA.

Where does the information in the database come from?

  • Parish Register Authority at Schwerin (Church registers)
  • Mecklenburg Main State Archive at Schwerin (Emigration permits beginning from 1863)
  • Ships passenger lists of emigrants’ ships
