Emigration from Mecklenburg

About 250,000 people left their home country Mecklenburg from 1850 to 1900. Some 200,000 of them emigrated overseas, most going to the United States of America.

Please compare this to Mecklenburg’s total population of that days:

In 1875 the duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin had circa 550,000 inhabitants,
the duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz about 95,000.
Thus, Mecklenburg had the highest emigration count of all German states compared to their number of residents. No other German region has had so many emigrants.

By the end of the 19th century there must have been only a few families of Mecklenburg’s rural population who had no relatives or acquaintances living in America.
